Why Mac's are great..

Yesterday morning I reached for my faithful Mac PowerBook G4. The night before I'd put on the latest patch sets and rather than reboot I simply powered the laptop off. Powering it back on seemed to take forever, which in reality was probably about three or four minutes. It made me realise how much time I save each and every time I simply open the lid, type in my password and away I go. The PowerBook on standby will last four or five days without use which all the PC laptops I've ever used won't do, forcing me to use the sometimes flakey XP hibernate function. But the future may be grim as my recent short lived upgrade to a MacBookPro highlighted. The MBP didn't have anywhere near the standby capacity of the old model, lasting 24 hours without mains power before it ran out of juice. That on top of the heavy MBP power supply (I know I'm being picky but I have to carry the thing!), large footprint and the heat generated on my lap during use mean that I'm not missing it. To be honest I'm blissfully happy with my faithful old PowerBook. Long may it last.

K850i torch

Just found that this phone has a torch feature. The K800's xenon flash wasn't suitable.

K850i

Got a new phone today - a SonyEricsson K850i. It's to replace my K800i for no other reason than I fancied a change and I was out of contract.

First impressions of the phone are favourable. The user interface has changed with the addition of three 'soft buttons' along the bottom of the screen which are quite natty. There's also an accelerometer inside the phone so the phone is aware of which way up it's being held and at times changes the screen from landscape to portrait accordingly. The screen is bigger than the K800i.

I've not tried out the 5 megapixel camera yet. The automatic lense cap is neat but I'm sure that it'll be the first thing to break now that the fluff in the joystick has been negated; there's now a raised frame around the 2 and 5 keys that you used for navigation.

I've installed Opera Mini Beta 4 which works well.

Sky's mobile recording software was a bit of a faff to get working. I should be able to go to

http://mobile.sky.com/skyapp/skyapp.asp

and everything work but the phone isn't supported so I had to download the jar file directly:

Rocket recall

Last month I had a letter off Triumph telling me that I needed to get a new mapping loaded onto my Rocket because of a potential issue with the bike stalling as the engine returns to idle. It's not a problem I've seen since I first bought the bike. That may have had something to do with the TuneBoy tune that I'd blown over the top.. anyway I digress..

So the bike's now popping and farting like it used to before the TuneBoy tune was applyed. At some point over the next couple of weeks I'll put my old map back on which will mean that this whole exercise was just to get a tick in a box. Why did I go to the trouble? The recall is being monitored by the government's Vehicle Operator Service Agency so I didn't want a black mark against the bike to effect re-sale value in the future.

One good think that's come out of all of this is that I've found a new Triumph dealer. I've not been overly impressed with the service that I get at Haslemere Motorcycles where I bought the bike from. They've let me down once or twice and haven't once left me feeling completely satisfied so I've been sounding out other dealers. Haslemere is the closest. Next is Jack Lilley's at the top of the M3. I went there a couple of months ago for a nose and didn't see it at its best as they were just finishing off a refit. I would have taken the Rocket there for the remapping if I hadn't noticed 'Triumph Reading' on the list of dealers that accompanied the recall notice. I didn't know that a new Triumph dealer had opened in Twyford last April. I gave them a call a couple of weeks ago about booking the bike in and had a refreshing reply of "it's only a five minute job. Pop the bike in when you're passing". So that's what I did today. Had a free cup of coffee whilst I was waiting and after being invited to join their RAT group I was away.

Bulldog aren't on the Pocket GPS World Triumph dealer POI. I saved the co-ordinates on my Garmin so I'll have to get them off and work out how to add a POI to the existing list..

New Ackme Website

I've finally gotton around to updating http://ackme.co.uk/ to Drupal 5. It meant that I had to re-construct the website theme which has taken a little while as I wanted to avoid the hacks and sellotape!

It's W3C compliant:

and W3C CSS valid.
